Subject: Jozsef Garai First meeting
Colleagues
A committee met to evaluate Jozsef Garai's progress at Stony Brook and to discuss his research, including material covered in his second circus talk.
The recommendation of this committee, to the graduate committee, is that Joszef be terminated as of December 15. The first meeting committee feels that unless Joszef can find an advisor willing to support him intellectually in a viable research project, termination is in his and the department's best interests. I informed Jozsef of the committee's decision today at 2:40 PM. The full report of the committee is available in the student's permanent record. This is a difficult time for all, and I and the other members of the graduate committee will entertain any advice/direction the faculty wishes to give. I am asking the Grad committee to provide a recommendation to the full faculty by the next full faculty meeting.

Dear Iris:
Please prepare the following for my signature today.
Mr. Jozsef Garai
Dept. of Geosciences
SUNY at Stony Brook
Stony Brook, NY 11794-2100
Dear Jozsef:
Following the meeting of your First Meeting Committee with you on November 10, 1999, the Committee submitted it recommendations to the Graduate Committee and the full faculty of the Department of Geosciences on November 15, 1999.
The faculty concurs with the recommendations of the First Meeting and Graduate Committees that your program of graduate study be terminated at the end of the Fall 1999 semester. This decision is based primarily on the fact that you have not succeeded in identifying a viable research project and a faculty advisor willing to supervise this project during your first 3 semesters of graduate study at Stony Brook following your M. Sc. degree from the Technical University of Budapest.
Since it is unlikely that you will be able to find a faculty member in the Department of Geosciences to sustain and supervise your research interests by the December 15 deadline of the Committees, we feel that it is best for you to withdraw from the University and the Department at the end of the Fall 2000 semester.
I would like to assure you that this decision was not taken lightly. We believe that termination, in cases where the goals and interests of the Department and the student diverge, is in the long-term interest of both the student and the department's graduate program.
We wish you best in your future endeavors.
Sincerely yours,
Robert C. Liebermann

Dear Jozsef:
As I indicated during our conversation on Friday, December 3, 1999, you should now write a letter in response to my letter of November 17, 1999, in which you describe to the Geosciences faculty your new plan for graduate study in our Department.
I would appreciate receiving this letter by 12 Noon tomorrow, Tuesday, December 7.
Thank you,
Bob
