Dear Don,

The funding of my NSF proposal to support the operation of the high-pressure lab and to restart my experimental petrology program has been declined. I have also applied to about 50 job openings in the U.S. and abroad without success. I have not even been able to find a visiting position at other high-pressure labs. I have run out of options. I simply do not know what else I can do to stay in science.

As you know, I was fortunate to be able to spend over 20 years actively involved in conducting research. That by itself is unprecedented in the academic environment. My experimental studies at high pressures were conducted with high efficiency and productivity, which resulted in an extensive set of high-quality data unmatched by any other experimental petrologist. I have recently summarized the results of these studies, as well as the results from the research at high pressures and temperatures by many other experimental petrologists, in a book. The book was written under extreme hardship, with no financial or moral support from the NSF, the Department, the University, or the scientific community. I firmly believe that my book represents the most significant achievement in the history of high-pressure research, and is a major contribution to the advancement of science. Many experimental petrologists with less significant personal accomplishments have received the highest honors. I cannot understand why I have not been able to translate my accomplishments into a permanent position or recognition.

I believe I have the right to know what went wrong, and I would appreciate if you could provide some answers. Since the end of CHiPR had such serious consequences for me (and apparently nobody else), I want to know if you made any effort, in your negotiations with the NSF for setting up COMPRES, to secure the continuation of the funding for the high-pressure lab and my former position of the Lab Manager, and, if yes, why it was not successful. I would also like to know if there is anything you can do to help.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Sincerely yours,

Tibor Gasparik
Research Associate Professor
