Dear Dr. Bement:

Congratulations on your confirmation as the new Director of the NSF. I was hoping to hear from you concerning my proposal, since now you have the mandate to address the corruption within the ranks of the NSF staff, and to eliminate the liberal bias in the review process that makes it almost impossible for the scientists who are not liberals to receive research funding. To refresh your memory, I am enclosing a CD with the complete documentation of my struggle to return to research after many years of persecution by the liberal scientific establishment. I submitted my research proposal twice, in 2002 and 2003; both times the funding for the proposal was denied after an unfair review process, and all my subsequent appeals were unsuccessful. This despite the fact that it is impossible to achieve further progress in our understanding of the Earth’s interior without carrying out the proposed research. Although the NSF engaged in some kind of damage control, by transferring the Program Director responsible for the corrupt reviews of my proposal to a different program, this has done nothing for me. While Thomas Wagner still receives his paycheck, I have not received a paycheck since the end of CHiPR on January 31, 2002. I fully expect the NSF to address as soon as possible the persecution and injustice that I have suffered since the end of CHiPR and for which it is partially responsible, to review my case, and to make the appropriate corrections. At the very least I expect to be reemployed in my former position as the Manager of the Stony Brook High Pressure Lab, and to have my research funding restored.

Although the NSF cannot be held responsible for the blatant discrimination against conservative scientists practiced by almost all universities in this country, it should not continue to encourage such discrimination by rewarding institutions that have been most successful in achieving ideological purity, such as the SUNY at Stony Brook, with extra funding. It is time for the NSF to address aggressively this kind of discrimination, as it addresses all other kinds of discrimination, by making it clear that the institutions and individuals known to discriminate against conservative scientists in hiring, retention and promotion would not be eligible for federal research funding. The pervasive discrimination against the non-liberal scientists in this country is equally abhorrent and evil as was the discrimination against the non-communist scientists in the Stalinist Soviet Union or against the non-Aryan scientists in the Nazi Germany.

I hope you agree to review my case and make it possible for me to become again a productive member of the American scientific community. I have been unemployed since January 31, 2002, and cannot afford to hold on to my position of the Research Associate Professor for much longer without your help. I have already made personal sacrifices far above and beyond of what could reasonably be expected from a dedicated scientist. Since you were appointed by President Bush, I believe that it is your duty to eliminate the liberal bias in the NSF review process that is the main cause of its corruption, and to make a sincere effort to address and amend the consequences of this corruption resulting from the extreme liberal policies introduced by your predecessor, Dr. Rita R. Colwell. Years of discrimination against scientists with conservative views by universities and federal funding agencies nationwide may require nothing less than affirmative action to correct for this abuse and thus return intellectual diversity into research and higher education.
