Professor Teng-fong Wong, Chair
Department of Geosciences
SUNY at Stony Brook
Stony Brook, NY 11794
Dear Teng-fong,
On January 8, 2004, I submitted a letter to Scott McLennan, the former Chair of the Department of Geosciences. This letter was forwarded to you, since you have become the new Chair on January 1. In this letter and the enclosed documentation, I asked for help, particularly I asked the Department to support a promotion for me to the full professor, and to give me an opportunity to teach.
As you know, I made invaluable contributions to this Department while serving as the manager of the Stony Brook High Pressure Lab during the 11 years of duration of the Center for High Pressure Research (CHiPR), and, at the same time, carried out word-class research that resulted in 70 publications during my whole scientific career, and was summarized in my book: “Phase Diagrams for Geoscientists: An Atlas of the Earth Interior.” This book was published by Springer-Verlag in March 2003, and since January of this year has been rated by Amazon.com as the most popular book in petrology (see the enclosed printouts). The book is a landmark in experimental petrology and represents one of the most important contributions of this Department in its whole history to the advancement of science. I have been a Research Associate Professor at this Department for 15 years since 1989, and I believe that my accomplishments are more than adequate to make a strong case to the University for my promotion.
I also asked you to make sure that you answer as the Chair for the whole Department concerning my request. Please let me know when I will receive your answer.
Sincerely yours,
Tibor Gasparik
Research Associate Professor
