TOEFL: He has taken the computer-based version of this exam and scored a total of 237. I have asked Iris to obtain a conversion from the Graduate School, so that we can compare this score with the written ones, for which a 600 is required for TAs and 550 for admission.
GRE: Based on previous communications with Vlad Litvin, via his father, I have informed him that he can take this exam AFTER arriving at Stony Brook next fall. If I have misinformed him, then I will take the responsibility. However, I based this on information provided by Iris Roth, and copied John Parise on my original communication, and the follow-up one on 19 Jan. 1999.
I was impressed by Vlad's performance in the CHiPR Summer Scholars program, except for him being late to meetings. I also noticed that he had matured significantly when we met in April 1998 in Orleans, France at the EMPG meeting.
Letters of support from Zharikov, Ryabchikov, and Perchuk are very strong, perhaps too strong. However, several of us know Leonik Perchuk, and I do not think that he would like to mislead us. If you wish a calibration, you might ask Don Lindsley to take a look at the letters.
Perhaps my only concern about Vlad Litvin is that he may be TOO focussed on a specific research project, based on his experience at Chernogolovka and here to date, and not intellectually flexible and open to learning new things and considering other areas of research, even if still in experimental petrology. In that context, I have encouraged the Graduate Committee to ask that Don and Hanna also consider this file, in addition to Tibor (who has expressed an interest and willingness to be an advisor to Litvin if he were to be admitted).
