Subject: Meeting of Probe users

Now that everyone is back in town, I want to schedule a meeting to discuss our microprobe - now and for the future. Bob Liebermann has asked me to be in charge of the microprobe lab. We need to have a meeting of probe users (and potential users) to discuss both short-term and long-term aspects of our microprobe facility. The meeting will be at 12 noon Tuesday, Oct. 19 in Room 123. Please note that I have NOT invited the probe lab manager, Bob Rapp, to this particular meeting. This is because some part of the meeting will be devoted to discussing his stewardship of the probe lab, and I want people to be able to speak freely. I would appreciate it if you would not mention this meeting to him, as I don't want to cause him undue concern. Please be assured that he WILL be invited to most future meetings regarding the probe. If you do not attend, please let me know whether your absence was from lack of interest, or a conflict. In the latter case I'll keep you on my list for future communications.

Agenda:
A. Current status, functioning, etc. of our Cameca Camebax microprobe.
1. Hardware (including KEVEX EDS system). Any other problems?
2. Software: Proposed purge of obsolete data files (for example, hard drive has
files from Chris Hadjigeorgiou, who graduated in 1990).
3. Need for much more complete probe log. This includes Rapp's use, which is usually not logged at present. Such omissions will make it harder to justify a new probe (see below) if we decide to go that route.
4. Should instruction book be updated? Do we need a "Current Events" board where temporary fixes and other deviations from the printed instructions can be listed? Just for example, at present, Rapp recommends using PERI rather than FARA) for setting beam current as well as tuning the beam. But this is not written down.
5. Is there a need for a formal probe course? If so, when should it be given?

B. Plans for the future.
1. Should we replace the Camebax? a. Is there sufficient usage (current and future) to justify the expenditure? b. If so, when, and through what avenue?
2. Possibility of regional facility. For example, Hanna Nekvasil has used the probe at the American Museum of Natural History, and has been investigation the possibility of our "buying in" to use that probe.

C. Any other business?
